New Requirements for Requalification of Specification Cylinders

January 23, 2017

Due to a change in the law regarding requirements for requalification of specification cylinders, effective January 23, 2017, LP-gas cylinders must be requalified 10 years after the date of manufacture. For example, a cylinder manufactured in February 2007 now requires requalification by February 2017.

On January 23, 2017, Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC) Alternative Fuel Inspectors will begin citing individual containers. Cylinders located within a retail cylinder exchange rack will be given until April 1, 2017 to be compliant with the law; allowing licensees to verify and remove out-of-date cylinders as the racks are serviced.

The change from the 12-year to a 10-year requalification requirement, is in accordance with recent amendments to the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49, §180.209(e). The requirement is retroactive and applies to all cylinders.

Contact the RRC’s Alternative Fuels Safety department at 512-463-6462 with questions regarding this requirement.
